How to Test for Dead and Stuck Pixels

Modern LCD, IPS, and OLED panels consist of millions of RGB (Red, Green, Blue) subpixels. When a transistor fails or becomes unresponsive, it results in visible screen defects.

Dead Pixel (Always Dark): A dead pixel is permanently turned off and appears as a persistent black dot on bright white or solid color screens.

Stuck Subpixel (Constant Color): A stuck pixel remains constantly illuminated in Red, Green, or Blue. It is easiest to detect against contrasting black or white screens.

Backlight Bleed & IPS Glow: Common on LED panels where light leaks through display edges. A fullscreen black screen in a dark room makes bleeding immediately apparent.

A dead pixel is permanently unpowered and shows up as a black dot on light backgrounds. A stuck pixel is stuck in an 'on' state and shows up as a persistent single color (Red, Green, or Blue) on contrasting backgrounds. Stuck pixels can sometimes be unstuck using rapid color cycling tools.
